I made these 1997 or 1998.
Now they fit again. Though the red wool one is still too short in front (not that I expected that to change from being in storage over a decade) and will need to get a border in another colour around the bottom of the dress.

Double Wars in Costumes
So, yesterday I got back from the wonderful SCA event Double Wars, where I spent a week, Saturday to Saturday - living in my pavilion, hanging out with friends. And dressing up, becuse there were plenty of courts, and a masked ball.
This year I went to more classes than I have ever done, most of them dance classes, held by mistress Caitlin from Gaita. I also made a mask for the ball, at a class held by viscountess Wilhelmina Weydehartz.
My husband and youngest daughter came on Wednesday, which of course made it even nicer.
I managed to get good photos of gowns too, so there will be more pages with documentation and discussion as soon as the semester is over and I can focus on something else than work.
Until then I will just show you pictures from the event, and of mine and my friend's and family's clothing.

Late 13th century Italian. This gown will get it's own page.
Me and Aelfwynne, the Princess of Nordmark. I'm wearing my new mi-parti gown based on a 13th century Sicilian manuscript.
The same gown, with a belt.
This is also an Italian gown from ca 1330-1340. It needs its overgown from the same fabric, but since this fabric was an absolute pain to cut and sew that hasn't been made yet.
My green and white Italian ca 1320-1330
It's a lot looser than it was, despite me taking it in.

Making and re-making
Today I finished the baron's mi-parti brocade gown. Unlike mine it has buttons on the sleeves (I can get my hands through them anyway).
Sleeves and buttons:
Photos of the actual gowns will come after Double Wras, when we have worn them together.
I also re-made an old liripie hodd od Maja's - she couldn't pull it over her head anymore, so I opened it and made buttonholes and sewed on brass buttons. I also re-made a shift that once belonged to her sister's and which is a bit too narrow over the chest into a shirt for the baron's son; it only needd to be shortened and hemmed.
Finally I remade the neck opening on my green silk bliaut. The reason why it has such a deep opening was that I needed to be able to nurse Maja. But now when a) I haven't nursed for ten years and b) I fit into it again I unpicked the trim, shortened it and sewed the slit together.

I've got something new and wonderful!
Today a hairnet that I comissioned from the talented Laura Hämäri who has the site and blog Knots in a Net arrived in the mail.
It's based on extant nets and I am so happy with it.
I had to try it on. I knew that I had fill it with some extra, fake, hair, to make it puff out at the sides as tehy do in 13th and early 14th century images, but I didn't have the energy (I've worked way too much today) to figure out the best way to add it, so I just pinned a false braid to my real hair and put on the net.
Even then I think that it looks great.

I will get proper photos taken at Double Wars. Where I'm wearing a shift under my gown, for instance. :)

My viking outfit re-made, and a visit to a viking market
Om Thursday's sewing meeting at my place I took in my Köstrup viking dress, and today I wore it to Ale Viking market. Except that I forgot to bring my string of beads that I hade re-threaded last night - typical.
The market was packed with peopel- the warm and sunny weather probably helped there. There were lots of vendors, but I managed to get away without buying more than two deer's antlers for a non-historical project.
Met lots of friends. This is my friend Graciela and parts of her family (husband and one son not visible)

Here you can see the husband eating behind us two though :)
The market is very beautifully situated, and this sight of the children playing among the trees and wood anemones was just magical.
And I ran into baron Måns, also dressed in viking garb. And I got a hug from his very nice son.
